Porcelain Veneers at Bacchus Marsh, Melton & Ballan

Dental veneers are used in cosmetic dentistry to improve the appearance of teeth. They may be used for one tooth or multiple teeth, and can help fix chipped or broken teeth, discoloured teeth or even teeth that appear too small compared to the rest. Commonly used for front teeth, they are permanently bonded and built to last.

What are
Porcelain Veneers?

What are Porcelain Veneers Bacchus Marsh, Melton & Ballan - Bacchus Marsh Dental House

Veneers may be made of resin or porcelain. Porcelain is the superior material, because they resist stains better and so keep their original colour. And because we customize them in our laboratory, they will be better matched to the colour of your natural teeth, or we can make them whiter if you prefer a brighter smile.

Porcelain veneers are extremely thin coverings that are permanently attached, or bonded, to your natural teeth. Using the latest technology, we customize them to properly fit your tooth, so you can’t even tell they are veneers. Some benefits that patients enjoy are:

They are strong and last a long time; 10-15 years or more
They can be perfectly customized to your desired tooth colour
They resist stains

The surface of the veneer is very natural, much like the enamel of your teeth

They can quickly change the shape of your teeth with a simple treatment
They can straighten your smile quicker than braces

Are Veneers Right for You?

Whether porcelain veneers are right for you depends on a number of factors. For example, if your teeth are very crooked, it may be better to use braces or Invisalign first. We want to keep your teeth healthy, and trying to fit a veneer on very crooked teeth to straighten them might cause too much damage to your natural tooth enamel. Another reason to avoid a veneer would be if a tooth has a large filling or root canal. In this case, a porcelain crown would be better suited, as they can cover more to protect the underlying tooth more than a veneer would. Lastly, if you have an existing problem like periodontitis or gingivitis, it is best to get that under control before you acquire dental veneers. With that being said, here are some situations in which porcelain veneers would be best for:

Mildly crooked teeth or a tooth that is out of place compared to the rest

Chipped teeth

Teeth that are very worn

Stained teeth

Teeth with gaps or uneven spaces, especially in front

Porcelain Veneer Technology

Our team of professional dentists here at Dental House always use the latest technology to save you time and money. We can simulate what your new veneers will look like, so you know you will be happy with your final result by placing composites on your teeth so you have an idea of what your new veneers will look like. If you want to try different looks, we can use a special technology called the Digital Smile Design, which helps you find your gorgeous smile. Once you choose the look you desire, we can work on your veneers in our lab to shape and colour them. When we place them in your mouth, you will see your vision come to life; you might even feel like they’ve always been a part of you.

The Porcelain Veneer Procedure

The Porcelain Veneer Procedure Bacchus Marsh, Melton & Ballan - Bacchus Marsh Dental House (2)
Investigation and Treatment Planning (1-2 visits)

Over 1-2 visits, our dentist will collect all the information required to plan your smile. We will collect all the necessary informations e.g. xrays, photos, videos, intra oral examination in order to plan your case.

Once collected, we can formulate a treatment plan suitable for your needs. Quite often, we use Digital Smile Design so you can see the final result before you begin.

Preparation/Mockup (1-2 visit)

Once approved, we will then prepare your teeth for your final veneers. We will be able to provide a mockup that looks exactly like your final result so you can go home and take your new smile for a trial run. You will have the opportunity to make minor changes over 1-2 weeks to ensure the final outcome is what you desire.

Final Cementation (1 visit)

The entire process takes approximately 2-4 weeks from start to finish.

How Long Will My New Veneers Last?

Porcelain veneers are the most popular choice for veneers because they are durable. They can last for 10-15 years, but often longer if taken care of properly. They are stain-resistant, so you don’t have to worry about discolouration. If you grind your teeth at night, we may recommend a nightguard, which is an appliance to wear to protect teeth from the effects of bruxism. Practising healthy dental hygiene ensures good oral health, and will help your veneers last a long time.

Caring for Your Porcelain Veneers

You’ve spent the money for the perfect smile, so do your best to maintain your veneers. While they may last 15 years and longer, using certain precautions can help you get the most from your investment.

Z

Don’t chew hard objects like ice cubes or pens

Z

Don’t open bottles with your teeth

Z

Wear a mouthguard to sleep if you grind your teeth

Z

If you play sports, wear a mouthguard

Can I Have Veneers Removed?

Yes, you can, and the process is easy. However, the only reason one may want this done is if they are unhappy with the cosmetic look. We want you happy, that’s why we work with you every step of the way before your procedure, so you know that you are getting the smile you desire.

In spite of your best efforts, due to genetics or other reasons, you may still get a cavity under your veneer. Most of the time, we can do a simple filling underneath, but if the decay is extensive or severe, we can remove the veneer to fix the tooth. If this is the case, you may need to replace the veneer. To avoid this, we recommend having regular check-ups every six months to preserve the integrity of your teeth and your porcelain veneers.
