Top 5 Reasons Why You Need Your Wisdom Teeth Out?
Today we’re going to look at a set of teeth that may not be wise to leave in your mouth, your wisdom teeth, no pun intended!
Hi, Dr Fong here. I’m the principal dentist here at Dental House Group. Yesterday during an initial consultation with a new patient Peter from Macedon, he asked me “Do I have wisdom teeth? Do I need to remove them?”
So I thought I’ll make a quick video sharing with you what I shared with him.
Let’s look at the top five reasons that you should have your wisdom teeth out.
They’re usually the most difficult teeth to remove, which means if you’re in pain, and you come to the dentist with an infection of your wisdom teeth, a lot of times we cannot remove it on the day, which means you may be in pain for a number of days before the procedure can be done.
You’ll need time off work or school. Commonly after you remove your wisdom teeth, the recovery period could be anywhere between 24 hours to two weeks. So plan ahead is always ideal.
Healing will be faster when you’re younger. So having your wisdom teeth out in your teens is a good idea. Think about this, you don’t want to have your wisdom teeth out when you’re 70 or 80 years old. At that time, most likely you will be on a lot of medication. Your teeth have been in your jaw for many decades, which will make it very difficult to remove. Your jaw will be more fragile when you’re older. So there are a lot more risks, and healing will be slower.
If you’re looking to straighten your teeth with Invisalign, for example, having wisdom teeth out will help speed up the treatment. The reason because for clear aligners such as Invisalign, if we can wrap the plastic around your back teeth, the treatment will be faster and more predictable. So therefore, having your wisdom teeth out will help.
If you can’t clean them, how can us dentists maintain them? It’s almost impossible. A lot of times the wisdom teeth are so far at the back that it’s almost impossible to do a good filling on. So therefore, having them removed early is a good idea.
All the dentists and therapists here at Dental House are specifically trained to be extra gentle and compassionate. If you are considering having yours or your child’s wisdom teeth removed, and want an expert opinion, we would be happy to help.
