Why Are My Gums Bleeding?
Why Are My Gums Bleeding?
Hi there, my name is Fredrika and I am one of the Oral Health Therapists here at Dental House Group.
I just finished seeing one of our new patients, Jonathan from Melton for a check-up and clean. He shared with me that his gums bleed often, especially when he brushes his teeth. He asked me, “Fredrika, why do my gums bleed & how do I fix it”?
This is such a common problem we see, so I thought I’ll make a quick video sharing with you what I shared with him, just in case you have the same problem.
First of all one of the biggest signs of bleeding gums is a sign of poor dental hygiene. Causing the gums to be red, puffy and inflamed. Not only do they bleed when you brush or floss, but you will also notice a build up of plaque along the gumline and a bad smell causing bad breath.
So what is plaque? Plaque is a sticky film containing bacteria that covers your teeth and gums. When you leave plaque behind, the plaque matures and hardens and causes gum disease, tooth decay and bad breath.
So how do we fix this? Start by brushing your teeth morning and night and making sure you are getting the bristles along the gumline with a gentle dexterity. Followed by flossing at night time or after meals and making sure you are getting along the gumline.
It is also super important not only for your teeth and gums but for your overall health to have a professional clean every 6 months. Depending on how severe your gum disease is you may be required to have the professional clean more often.
If your gums are bleeding often, and it has been awhile since you had a professional check up and clean, we would love to look after you. Here at Dental House, you will see one of our amazing Oral Health Therapists or Dental Hygienists. We will start by assessing your gum health and from there we will discuss the best care for you. On the day we will remove the mature plaque build up that’s sitting under the gums and we will advise you the best and easiest technique on how to manage your bleeding gums from home with gentle brushing & flossing.
