Prevention is Key

Paediatric dentistry is more than filling cavities or teaching a child to brush. Dental problems from infections or abscesses can lead to worse health issues and even hospitalisation, if left unchecked. Cavities that are left untreated can lead to a root canal or tooth loss. If a baby tooth is lost prematurely, this can significantly impact on the development of the adult teeth underneath, resulting in space loss and expensive orthodontic treatment when they’re older. In addition, an infection of the baby tooth can affect the development of the subsequent adult teeth underneath, resulting in more expensive treatment in the future.

And worse of all, if the child is in pain due to an infection they will have a negative psychological effect going to the dentist. This may cause long term anxiety of the child going to the dentist in the future, even through adulthood. Therefore it is very important to regularly take your children to the dentist for a checkup and cleans to build a positive experience from the outset.

Tell, Show, Do

Our caring professionals begin with a dental checkup that is straightforward, yet compassionate and gentle. We utilise a Tell, Show, and Do Technique.

Tell:

First, we tell the child what we are doing, just to make sure that they are aware of the process and there are no surprises.

Show:

Next, we show them exactly what is going to happen, step-by-step, and see if they have any questions. And then we do the work with a gentle and caring touch.

Do:

A comfortable visit is all in the details, so we pay attention. Some children like to hold a mirror so they can see what we are doing, which helps them feel part of the process and more in control. We inform our young patients that they can raise their hand if they have any issues and we will stop immediately. This provides an even greater amount of security, so they know we will be respectful and stop at any sign of stress or pain.

We Set Up Your Child for a Lifetime of Positive Dental Health

Educating children about dental hygiene and teaching them how to avoid future pain and problems is important to us. So, we do our best and try to make it fun with tools like a cartoon video to teach kids about flossing. We even offer helpful tips like leave a sticky note on the bathroom mirror to remind your child to floss, or bring dark glasses to wear in the dental chair.

Sometimes special procedures are necessary to avoid future problems, and working with children from an early age allows us to understand each individual’s needs. For example, we can gently widen the jaw to avoid future mouth problems or the need for braces. And if your child does need braces, we offer Invisalign as a comfortable, gentle and clear alternative, so your child is confident with their smile, even on social media.

And thanks to social media, teenagers are more accepting of braces and straightening processes than ever before. As children become teenagers, they are naturally more conscientious of their looks and enjoy sharing their photos, which has increased the demand for straighter teeth. To keep up, we offer the latest technology to ensure your child’s smile gives them the confidence they desire. And with our minimal discomfort injections and gentle touch, you can be assured that we will take care of your child through the entire process.

The First Visit

The first visit is the most important, and we recommend bringing them in for a checkup before any dental problems arise. You can choose from a variety of approaches such as a full dental exam to check for tissue development and growth or tooth polishing to remove plaque.

Identifying problems early and can help your child avoid future pain or health issues that can happen when left unchecked. Our experienced team helps young patients overcome anxiety, and we strive to provide an educational and positive visit.

Your child’s first dental visit can be comfortable, and we strive to help them become part of the process. First, your child will be shown how the dentist works; they get a ride in the chair and see how the bright light is used by the dentist. We educate our young patients from beginning to end, so they understand the importance of dental hygiene and care. The entire process can even be fun, so your child feels comfortable in our environment, as they realize that all is well.

A child’s first pedriatric dentistry visit can be stressful for both parents and children, but preparation can make the visit more comfortable. Here are some things you can do ahead of time at home to ensure the day goes smoothly:

Avoid using certain words, such as needle or pain
Avoid phrases like, “The dentist is going to take out your teeth,” because that may be more frightening to a young child than it would be to an adult
Bring sunglasses to shield your child’s eyes from the light while in the dental chair
If the child is young, schedule a morning visit when they are fresh and alert
Bring a phone and let them listen to music or play a game while in the dentist’s chair
Let the dentist know ahead of time of any questions or concerns
Talk to your child and let them know why a dental visit is important, while building understanding and excitement
