A gummy smile or prominent gums may be a cause of concern for some patients. If you have a gummy smile that you’d like to fix, we have the solutions for you. First, we determine the reason for a gummy smile as it can be a result of small or worn teeth, a short upper lip, hypermobility of the upper lip (which recedes too much when you smile) or gums that are long or enlarged; a condition known as gingival hypertrophy. In any case, our team of dedicated professionals will find the right solution for you.

Soft Tissue Laser Gum Contouring

In most cases, a soft tissue laser treatment can be used to recontour the shape of your gums. Sometimes called Gum Recontouring, this is a mild form of reshaping the gumline to give you a smile with more teeth than gums. During this easy treatment, a topical and local anesthetic is administered, then the laser is used to contour the gum around the margin. One benefit of this dental treatment is the lack of vibration and heat, so the procedure is very comfortable. In addition, the laser helps seal blood vessels, so you experience less blood and swelling for a quicker recovery time. The result is a beautiful smile with a minimally invasive procedure.

Surgical Gum Treatment

In some cases, a little more gum needs to be removed, or the bone needs to be recontoured. Surgical gum treatment may be used and is a common procedure, often used in regenerative dentistry or to treat gum disease. During the treatment, a local anesthetic is used, and the patient may feel mild vibration or pressure. Again, the procedure is relatively with minimal discomfort and recovery downtime is also minimal. Over-the-counter medications can help reduce inflammation and mild pain, while patients can often get right back to work.

Cosmetic Injectable

While this may sound strange to some, Cosmetic Injectable may be the right treatment for you. Sometimes the gums and teeth are in great shape, but the muscles around the mouth may move too far when you smile. This condition is known as hypermobility of the lip, and while there are no medical issues linked to it, some patients feel it takes away from their smile. If this sounds like you, we can help with Cosmetic Injectable injections to relax the upper lip. When you smile, the relaxing effect of Cosmetic Injectable will keep your gums behind your lip while only your pearly whites show through.

Porcelain Veneers

Genetics may be at play if smaller than normal teeth cause a gummy smile. Besides genetics, smaller teeth may be due to extreme wear from bruxism (tooth grinding), or trauma. But there is no need to go full dentures or to replace the teeth, because they can be easily fixed with porcelain veneers.

Veneers are a thin shell-like covering which are placed as a permanent fixture on teeth. Your natural teeth are left intact, but may be reshaped to hold the veneers in place. Veneers allow you to choose the shape and color of your new teeth, for personal satisfaction. Many people use this opportunity to lengthen and straighten teeth and achieve a whiter smile.

Personalised Services for Your Smile Bacchus Marsh, Melton & Ballan – Bacchus Marsh Dental House

Personalised Services for Your Smile

Using gum contouring or treatment should result in a smile that you desire and deserve, but some patients may require more personalized service than those described above. For example, if teeth are crooked above the gumline, removing some of the gum will show more of the crooked teeth. If this is the case, we may recommend braces or Invisalign as a more appropriate treatment before gum recontouring. No matter what your individual needs are, we are committed to providing the highest quality service, and will work with you each step of the way until you get the smile you deserve.

Benefits of Gum Treatment

Benefits of Gum Treatment Bacchus Marsh, Melton & Ballan - Bacchus Marsh Dental House
Gum treatments and recontouring result in a healthy smile, where more of your teeth can be seen. It is a fairly easy and common cosmetic procedure that helps a patient achieve the best results with very little downtime. If your treatment is used to remove damaged gums due to infection, you will be rewarded with healthy teeth and a great smile. Other benefits include:

A balanced smile if your gums were crooked

Reduced risk of future dental problems

Confidence in the way you look and feel

After Care of Treatment

Each situation is different, and your dental professional will offer guidance on the best care for your new smile. But there are some guidelines to be ready for:

Most patients will need no time off work and may even return the same day, but your dentist will let you know ahead of time what to expect so you can be prepared
Some procedures may cause a little discomfort while healing, and most patients are able to use an over-the-counter medication to help
Eating soft foods may be advised to allow time for the gum tissue to heal, and you also may be advised to not eat crunchy foods for a day or two
Avoid using straws for a few days as they may interfere with clotting along the gumline
Brushing is still necessary, but your dentist may recommend you use a soft-bristle toothbrush
Flossing will depend on the patient, so check with your dentist
You may be asked to use a warm diluted saline rinse to keep your mouth sanitary, as the usual antibiotic mouthwash may be too harsh for healing gums
A follow-up visit to ensure all is healing nicely may be required
