Benefits of Dentures

Disadvantages of Dentures

They are cheaper than most other teeth replacement options
They are cheaper to repair if something goes wrong
They replace teeth and gums and can look very natural
If you have severe resorbed bone, dentures can bulk up your profile and make you look younger
You cannot eat hard foods. Typically you will lose 70-80% of your chewing capacity. (unless you have implants to support your denture)
They can break easily if you drop them
They are bulky to wear and uncomfortable
You can experience a ‘loss of taste’ due to their bulkiness
They will cause food traps and cause the remaining teeth to deteriorate faster if you don’t clean adequately
If you have no lower teeth, a full lower denture is one of the most uncomfortable dental solutions (unless you have implants to support your denture.)

Types of Dentures

There are various materials that make up dentures. They are mostly made from acrylic resins, but they can also be made with a cobalt chrome metal framework underneath the acrylic. Other options have a mechanical retention housing that clicks into the implants for added stability, but your dentist will talk you through your options during your consultation.

Complete Dentures

are used when all your teeth are missing.

Partial Dentures

or overdentures are used when only a few teeth need replacing. They prevent teeth from shifting following tooth loss.

Immediate Dentures

are used when teeth need to be extracted and the structure of your gums and surrounding tissues need to heal before your final dentures are made. The healing process can take several months, which is why immediate dentures can be easily modified.

Securing the Dentures

Dentures can be held in place using their natural suction to your gums or a fixative. That said, they often come loose and cause issues with chewing and eating certain foods. Dental implants or mini implants help fix the dentures more securely, giving you the confidence to eat whatever you want. However, it’s worth noting that your chewing force is around 30% to what it was, although with fixed dentures you don’t have to worry about them coming loose or falling out.

Looking After Your Dentures

There are several ways to keep your dentures clean. Removing them at night to allow your gums to rest and expose them to your saliva will help keep them healthy, and regular, thorough brushing and soaking of your dentures in a glass of cold water overnight will keep them clean.

You can also use tablets that are available at most stores for added cleaning power. If you do find your dentures accumulate stains you can’t brush away, be sure to make an appointment with your hygienist who will be able to professionally clean them for you.

Lastly, make regular visits to the dentist to ensure your remaining teeth and gums are healthy. If you keep up this routine, your dentures will last longer. However, over time it’s normal for them to become loose as your gums shrink and your bite changes, but simple modifications can solve this issue and maintain your oral health.

Making Your Dentures

After you’ve made an appointment with Bacchus Marsh Dental House, your needs will be assessed and your available options discussed. We need to work out how suitable your mouth is for dentures, and we may even have to remove some existing teeth or treat your gums before we can commence treatment. If you’re suitable, we’ll take an impression and our dental technicians will use it to create your dentures so they fit perfectly to the contours of your mouth.

Risk Factors

As with all treatments, there are several risks involved when choosing dentures. They’re often the last resort due to how uncomfortable they can be, how they move around your mouth when you talk, and how they make it difficult to chew your food. Patients often report a loss of taste due to the plastic covering all their soft tissues, ulcers due to rubbing, and food that tends to get stuck underneath and between the gaps.

Sobro O

This has to be the best dental practice I have ever been to (and I’ve been to a few over the years)! Have attended both Sunbury and most recently the Bacchus Marsh Dental House. All the Staff are wonderful. I see Dr. Fong and he is amazing. He makes me feel very comfortable and at ease. He is very personable and always make me laugh. Thanks also to the lovely Hannah who assisted when I had my recent procedure done.

Depending on the treatment and denture option you decide, the cost can be anywhere between $900 to $2500. We will discuss your options with you during your consultation so you’re aware of the cost vs. the pros and cons of whichever option you decide to commence with. Implants do cost more, although in our experience, patients find they’re often worth it considering how much their quality of life improves.
