No matter what your reason, our team of caring professionals will take the time to understand your goals and discuss whether whitening is appropriate for you.
The Process
Professional teeth whitening can be done in our clinic or we can create a whitening system for you to use at home. We begin with an exam to discuss which option is most appropriate for you. Next, we clean your teeth and prepare a whitening solution to suit your needs. Then, we can apply it in clinic or create a whitening kit for you to take home.
The Process
Dental Clinic Teeth Whitening
Bacchus Marsh Dental House offers professional in-chair teeth whitening, one of our most popular cosmetic treatments. We start with a comprehensive examination to confirm your suitability. Once approved, our team performs a scale and clean to prepare your teeth for whitening.
At your whitening session, we apply a protective gum barrier and a whitening gel. The Zoom lamp is then used to activate the solution. You’ll be in the care of our experienced Bacchus Marsh clinicians throughout the process.
At Home Teeth Whitening System
If your teeth and gums are healthy, you can request an at-home whitening system. After a thorough dental exam to confirm your suitability, we will prepare a solution and a custom dental tray for you. You then take it home and apply the gel and insert the tray over your teeth as directed. Your clinician will provide instructions on how long the solution should remain for the best outcome for your situation.
Is Teeth Whitening for Everyone?
There are many reasons why teeth become discoloured. Genetics or food and other external factors may play a role in the colour of your teeth. Tooth discolouration might be extrinsic or intrinsic, and the reason for discolouration will determine if you are a candidate for teeth whitening.
Extrinsic discolouration takes place when the outer layer of tooth enamel is stained by factors like what you eat or drink. Intrinsic discolouration takes place when the inner structure, or dentin, of the tooth either turns yellow or darkens to a greyish colour as stain-creating particles penetrate the exterior of the tooth and accumulate inside the enamel.
Teeth discolouration may be extrinsic, intrinsic, or a combination of both. The type of discolouration will be determined during a dental exam, but not all discolouration responds to teeth whitening procedures. Some types of discolouration may be prevented, while some are inherited. Our caring professionals will assess whether teeth whitening is appropriate for you. These are some of the most common causes of yellowing or darkening teeth:

Smoking

Coffee and tea

Chewing tobacco

Determining the reason behind discoloured teeth helps us find the appropriate treatment for each patient. Our team of experienced professionals can help identify what the cause may be, and discuss the most suitable whitening options for your situation.
Risks and Recovery
Teeth whitening is a non-invasive procedure, but it still carries risks and recovery considerations.
Possible risks include:
- Temporary tooth sensitivity, especially to hot or cold
- Mild gum irritation from whitening gel contact
- Uneven results if there are existing fillings, crowns or veneers
- Overuse of whitening agents may weaken enamel
Recovery considerations:
- Many patients return to normal activities immediately
- Sensitivity usually settles within a few days
- Good oral hygiene and limiting staining foods and drinks can help maintain results

In some cases, certain whitening products may cause tooth sensitivity, gum irritation and can even turn teeth grey. Some products may even damage teeth if they are used incorrectly. At the same time, teeth whitening is not for everyone. For example, women who are pregnant or nursing should hold off, and those with untreated gum disease or tooth decay should avoid the process.
While whitening your teeth at home is an option for some, achieving good results with the least risk takes experience that only a dental professional can provide. When we assess the reasons for your tooth discolouration, we can advise whether whitening is appropriate for you. Proper planning can help save you time and money and avoid common complications that may arise from doing it yourself.
Our caring dental professionals will evaluate your individual needs and prepare your teeth for the process. We can determine the appropriate strength for your whitening gel and how long it should be used, to help you achieve a suitable outcome for your situation.
