Porcelain Veneers
Porcelain Veneers at Bacchus Marsh, Melton & Ballan
Dental veneers are used in cosmetic dentistry to address the appearance of teeth. They may be used for one tooth or multiple teeth, and can help with chipped or broken teeth, discoloured teeth or teeth that appear too small compared to the rest. Commonly used for front teeth, they are permanently bonded and built to last.
What are
Porcelain Veneers?

Veneers may be made of resin or porcelain. Porcelain is the preferred material, because they resist stains better and so keep their original colour. And because we customise them in our laboratory, they will be better matched to the colour of your natural teeth, or we can make them whiter if you prefer a brighter appearance.
Porcelain veneers are extremely thin coverings that are permanently attached, or bonded, to your natural teeth. Using the latest technology, we customise them to properly fit your tooth, so they blend naturally with your smile. Some benefits that patients enjoy are:
They can be customised to your desired tooth colour
The surface of the veneer is very natural, much like the enamel of your teeth
They can help change the shape of your teeth
They can help reposition the appearance of your smile without braces

Are Veneers Right for You?
Whether porcelain veneers are right for you depends on a number of factors. For example, if your teeth are very crooked, it may be better to use braces or Invisalign first. We want to keep your teeth healthy, and trying to fit a veneer on very crooked teeth might cause too much damage to your natural tooth enamel. Another reason to avoid a veneer would be if a tooth has a large filling or root canal. In this case, a porcelain crown would be better suited, as they can cover more to protect the underlying tooth more than a veneer would. Lastly, if you have an existing problem like periodontitis or gingivitis, it is best to get that under control before proceeding with dental veneers. With that being said, here are some situations in which porcelain veneers may be suitable:
Mildly crooked teeth or a tooth that is out of place compared to the rest
Chipped teeth
Teeth that are very worn
Stained teeth
Teeth with gaps or uneven spaces, especially in front
Porcelain Veneer Technology
Our team of experienced dentists here at Dental House always use the latest technology to help you plan your treatment and understand what to expect. We can simulate what your new veneers may look like by placing composites on your teeth, so you have an idea of the potential result before committing. If you want to explore different looks, we can use a technology called Digital Smile Design, which helps you visualise your options. Once you choose the look you’d like to pursue, we can work on your veneers in our lab to shape and colour them. When we place them, you’ll be able to see how they look as part of your natural smile.
The Porcelain Veneer Procedure
Investigation and Treatment Planning (1-2 visits)
Over 1-2 visits, our dentist will collect all the information required to plan your treatment. We will collect the necessary records, including x-rays, photos, videos and an intraoral examination, in order to plan your case. Once collected, we can formulate a treatment plan suitable for your needs. Quite often, we use Digital Smile Design so you can preview the proposed outcome before you begin.
Preparation/Mockup (1-2 visit)
Once approved, we will then prepare your teeth for your final veneers. We will provide a mockup based on your planned result so you can go home and trial how they look and feel. You will have the opportunity to make minor changes over 1-2 weeks before we finalise the outcome.
Final Cementation (1 visit)
The entire process takes approximately 2-4 weeks from start to finish.
Risks and Recovery
Porcelain veneers are a common restorative option, but as with any procedure, there are risks and recovery considerations.
Possible risks include:
- Temporary tooth sensitivity, especially to hot or cold
- Minor gum irritation following placement
- Veneer fracture or chipping if exposed to excessive biting forces
- Veneers may need adjustment or replacement over time
Recovery considerations:
- Many patients resume normal activities immediately after treatment
- Mild sensitivity may last for a few days and usually settles quickly
- Good oral hygiene and avoiding habits like nail biting or teeth grinding can extend the lifespan of veneers

How Long Will My New Veneers Last?
Porcelain veneers are a popular choice because they are durable. They can last for 10-15 years, and often longer if cared for properly. They are stain-resistant, which can help reduce the risk of discolouration over time. If you grind your teeth at night, we may recommend a nightguard, which is an appliance worn to help protect teeth from the effects of bruxism. Practising good dental hygiene supports your overall oral health and can help your veneers last longer.

Caring for Your Porcelain Veneers
You’ve invested in your veneers, so doing your best to care for them makes sense. While they may last 15 years and longer, using certain precautions can help you get the most from your investment.
Don’t chew hard objects like ice cubes or pens
Don’t open bottles with your teeth
Wear a mouthguard to sleep if you grind your teeth
If you play sports, wear a mouthguard
Brush and floss regularly, thoroughly and gently
Can I Have Veneers Removed?
Yes, veneers can be removed. However, because the procedure involves permanently altering your natural tooth enamel, it’s important to be well-informed before proceeding. That’s why we work with you every step of the way before your procedure, so you have a clear understanding of the planned outcome.
In spite of your best efforts, due to genetics or other reasons, you may still get a cavity under your veneer. Most of the time, we can do a filling underneath, but if the decay is extensive or severe, we can remove the veneer to treat the tooth. If this is the case, you may need to replace the veneer. To avoid this, we recommend having regular check-ups every six months to preserve the integrity of your teeth and your porcelain veneers.
