Orthodontic Solutions

The benefits gained from orthodontic treatment can be remarkable and long-lasting. The earlier the treatment is performed, the better your outcome will be. At Dental House Melbourne, we believe that all children between the ages of 8 and 9 years old should be examined to identify potential dental problems, so that a remedy can be put in place to avoid problems happening in the future. Orthodontics fitted on children between the ages of 11 and 16 tend to yield the best results due to their bones being easier to move around.
That said, anyone can benefit from orthodontics, with adult treatments available in less obvious forms, such as ‘undetectable ceramic braces’ that are more appealing due to the advances in technology and the common social preference of discretion.
During your appointment, we will make sure your teeth and gums are healthy enough to support orthodontics, and we will then take the necessary x-rays and photos to decide and fashion the best solution for your needs.

Types of Orthodontics
There are various solutions available depending on your needs and your desired aesthetic. These include:

Braces
Made out of stainless steel or porcelain, braces are usually placed on the smile side of the teeth, while lingual braces are placed on the back of the teeth. Both are secured with wires placed in a slot in the brackets that allow for controlled movement. Wires, elastic bands and springs can be used to push teeth apart or together to close a gap. Alternatives include clear aligners such as Invisalign or ‘invisible braces,’ which often fix issues faster and are more aesthetically desirable.

Headgear
Worn in conjunction with your orthodontics and attached to your head or face using a strap, headgear is used to treat more severe problems with an overbite or underbite.

Palatal Expansion
Used to widen the upper jaw, a palatal expander helps your top and bottom teeth fit together more comfortably. It works best on younger patients, with some adults opting for surgical separation for ease and efficiency.

Jaw Surgery
In severe cases of jaw misalignment, surgery is required to reposition the bones so the ‘bite’ is more even. This can be an uncomfortable procedure and you will need time to heal before orthodontic treatment can begin.
Securing the Orthodontics
Fixed braces are secured to your teeth using dental adhesives, while Invisalign is a removable device made using the latest technology to gradually adjust the position of your teeth. Impressions will be taken and then sent to a lab where a dental technician will create several retainers, each one made to adjust your teeth a little more than the last. You will be able to take them out and replace them in however many stages are needed over a period of time, or until the desired outcome is achieved.

Removing Your Orthodontics
Once your treatment has been successful, you will have a final check-up with your dentist. They will remove your fixed braces and perform a final assessment of your teeth, jaw and face. Most patients are delighted with their results and have a dramatically improved quality of life. In some cases, a retainer is required to avoid the teeth slipping back, which will be made for you to wear overnight.

Risks and Recovery
Braces are a common orthodontic treatment for alignment and bite correction, but they come with risks and recovery considerations.
Possible risks include:
- Gum irritation or mouth ulcers from brackets and wires
- Temporary discomfort after adjustments
- Difficulty cleaning teeth, which can increase the risk of cavities or gum inflammation
- Enamel decalcification or staining if oral hygiene is not maintained
- In some cases, root shortening may occur over time
Recovery considerations:
- Mild soreness is common for a few days after fitting or adjustments
- Patients usually adapt quickly to speaking and eating with braces
- A soft diet can help during the first few days of treatment
- Regular dental and orthodontic reviews are essential for monitoring progress
Some of Our Patients’ Results
Warning: The 'before' and 'after' images shown are of a real patient of our clinic. These images are for illustrative purposes only and do not represent the results that all patients can expect. Results vary depending on individual circumstances, and all surgical and cosmetic procedures carry risks.
Risk Factors
After a treatment has been successful, there can be a risk of tooth relapse, which can be avoided with a retainer (either fixed or removable). Another rare but potential risk includes root reduction – usually up to one or two millimetres. This can cause an issue if you ever contract gum disease, as your normal tooth support may be compromised. Complications with loss of periodontal support, bone support and failed soft tissue trauma can also happen – but rarely in healthy individuals.
Cost
The cost of orthodontics depends on three things:
Before you commit to any orthodontics, it’s important to choose a dentist with the appropriate expertise in relation to your wishes. Establishing trust is important, so asking your dentist the right questions, such as whether they have any before and after photos of patients with similar issues to yours, will put your mind at ease in regard to their abilities.
