Cosmetic Bonding at Bacchus Marsh, Melton & Ballan

A chipped or discoloured tooth can affect the appearance of your teeth. While these issues can be addressed through cosmetic dentistry, sometimes these procedures can be costly and extensive. If you are looking for a more accessible option, cosmetic bonding may be worth discussing with your dentist.

Cosmetic bonding is a dental procedure used to address the appearance of teeth. It is less invasive than other cosmetic procedures and is often a more affordable option.

In cosmetic bonding, our dental professionals apply a durable plastic material called resin that is bonded to the tooth to help restore and, in some cases, address the appearance of your teeth.

Cosmetic bonding is a practical dentistry solution that can often be completed in just one visit, unlike other procedures that may take weeks to complete. This can help reduce costs and is less invasive than other cosmetic procedures. It may be used to address a number of dental concerns, such as:

Chipped teeth

Misshaped teeth

Gaps between teeth

Broken or fractured teeth

Teeth that appear too short

Exposed tooth root where gums have receded

Worn teeth

An alternative to traditional amalgam or silver fillings

Stained or discoloured teeth

Who is a Candidate for Cosmetic Bonding?

Cosmetic bonding is used to address the appearance of teeth and can be used to help restore broken teeth. It is also used by some as an alternative to dental veneers or implants, but it may not be for everyone. This procedure is not suitable for large areas of misshapen or missing teeth and is not used to whiten all of your teeth.

Cosmetic bonding may be a suitable option for those with otherwise healthy teeth when only one or a couple of teeth need attention, and can be shaped and coloured to blend in with the rest of your teeth. While mainly used for adult patients, it can sometimes be a viable and cost-effective way to help address the appearance of children’s teeth while waiting for their adult teeth to come in. At Bacchus Marsh Dental House, our experienced professionals will do a full evaluation and exam to assess whether you are a candidate for cosmetic bonding.

Benefits of Cosmetic Bonding

The best way to determine if cosmetic bonding is appropriate for your situation is to come in for an examination or consultation. Our caring professionals will discuss the most suitable options for you and guide you through the process.

Cosmetic Bonding Procedure

The cosmetic bonding procedure generally involves less time than most other cosmetic procedures. Once your dental examination is complete with x-rays and your evaluation, your dental professional will go over the entire procedure so you know what to expect.

While each situation is different, there are general steps that are followed for most cosmetic bonding procedures. It is a straightforward procedure and often requires no local anaesthetic. In fact, preparation is often not necessary, unless it is used as a filling. Here are the general steps you can expect when visiting us for your cosmetic bonding procedure:

If your bonding is to fill a decayed tooth, then we may apply an anesthetic right before the procedure
First, we will use a shade guide to determine the correct resin colour for your teeth
Your dentist will then etch, or abrade the surface of your tooth so the bonding holds
Your tooth is then coated with a conditioning liquid
The dental resin is then applied, shaped and smoothed
Your new bonding will be hardened with a light or laser treatment
Once hardened, your dentist may shape it more, if necessary, to give you the perfect fit
The bonding will then be polished until the sheen matches your other teeth

Risks and Recovery

Cosmetic bonding uses tooth-coloured resin to improve the shape or appearance of teeth. As with any dental procedure, there are risks and recovery considerations.

Possible risks include:

  • Minor tooth or gum sensitivity after treatment
  • Chipping, wear or staining of the bonding material over time
  • Slight colour mismatch if the surrounding natural teeth change shade later
  • Bonding may require maintenance or replacement sooner than veneers or crowns

Recovery considerations:

  • Patients usually return to normal activities immediately
  • Any mild sensitivity typically resolves within a few days
  • Avoiding habits such as biting nails or chewing hard foods can help preserve the bonding
  • Regular reviews and professional polishing may extend the lifespan of the restoration

After-Care

Just like your regular teeth, those that have cosmetic bonding require maintenance and care. But it is important to not indulge in tea, coffee, smoking or other things that can stain your new tooth for the first 48 hours after your procedure. Aside from that, your regular maintenance may include the following:

Brush daily with a fluoride toothpaste
Schedule regular cleaning and checkups with your dentist
Floss and rinse with mouthwash according to your dental hygienist’s instructions
Do not eat ice, chew your nails or bite anything else hard as it can chip the bonding material
Call your dentist if you feel sharp edges on your bonding or if it feels “wrong” when you bite down
Your dental professional will provide a personalised protocol for your cosmetic bonding procedure. And follow up is important, because regular dental visits and proper care can help your bonding last for up to a decade or more!
