One of our regular patients, Kylie from Sunbury, was having her regular dental checkup and hygiene the other day, and told me she is considering getting dental veneers for her front teeth, but was concerned that because of her age, her teeth might be too weak.

Weak teeth can be a result of aging, but it is not a normal situation. Weak teeth are more likely to result from past traumas that have caused the tooth to chip or crack or may be due to tooth decay. Trauma on the front teeth can be a result of missing back teeth. They can also be the result of teeth grinding, or bruxism, which can not only wear your teeth down, but can weaken them due to constant pressure. Because these are all common situations, I thought I would make a video to answer the question, can I have veneers if my teeth are weak?

Dental veneers are commonly used to help strengthen the structure of a weak tooth, but it depends on why it is weak. If a tooth is chipped, cracked, broken or worn, a porcelain veneer can be a long lasting and durable fix to help your tooth stay strong. The veneer can also protect the tooth from further damage and improve the look of teeth. Porcelain veneers are the strongest materials for veneers, and they have the added benefit of being stain and decay resistant.

However, if your teeth are weak from decay, cavities or gum disease, then veneers are not the ideal choice. Teeth that have cavities or decay are suffering from infection and should be treated. We can clean the infection to stop it from spreading and fill in cavities to stop them from getting larger. Treating decay and cavities properly can also help prevent the need for root canal treatment.

Gum disease, also called periodontitis, is an infection that needs to be treated before getting veneers. If left untreated, the gum infection can cause bad breath, bleeding and tooth loss. In this case, periodontal treatment is the best course of action to take away the infection and save your gums and teeth and restore your oral health.

Now, back to veneers. Dental veneers can improve the shape, color, and length of teeth, and they can help a slightly crooked tooth fit in with the rest of your teeth. They can be used to fill gaps between teeth and seal cracks in teeth, which ultimately prevents bacteria from seeping into the tooth.
