Composite Veneers for Tooth Discolouration and Decay

3 5

Can composite veneers restore teeth affected by discolouration and decay in Sunbury?

Presenting Concerns

The patient presented with several concerns about the health and appearance of her teeth that had progressively worsened over time.

  • Tooth Discolouration: Teeth affected by yellowing and colour irregularity across the smile
  • Dental Decay: Active decay present in the teeth, including visible dark spots and cavities
  • Surface Wear and Build-up: Changes to the tooth surfaces affecting their shape and overall presentation
  • Smile Irregularity: Variation in the size, shape, and colour of the teeth creating an uneven appearance

The primary clinical objective was to address the active decay and restore a more even and consistent appearance to the smile using composite veneers.

Treatment Plan and Process

Composite veneers were used to address both the decay and the cosmetic concerns in a single appointment.

Phase 1: Assessment: A full examination confirmed the extent of the decay, the degree of discolouration, and the overall condition of the affected teeth. Composite veneers were confirmed as an appropriate approach.

Phase 2: Decay Management and Preparation: Active decay was addressed before the composite was applied. The tooth surfaces were cleaned and conditioned to allow the bonding material to adhere properly.

Phase 3: Composite Application and Finishing: Tooth-coloured composite resin was applied to each tooth in turn, sculpted to the planned shape, and cured in place. The completed restorations were polished and the bite was checked.

Clinical Outcome

Composite veneers were placed in a single appointment to address the active decay and restore a more consistent appearance across the smile.

Individual outcomes depend on the extent of the decay, oral hygiene compliance, dietary habits, and regular professional monitoring. Results experienced by one patient do not necessarily reflect outcomes others may experience.

Composite veneers are layers of tooth-coloured resin applied directly to the surface of the teeth by your dentist in a single visit. They can address colour, shape, and minor structural concerns in the same appointment. Unlike porcelain veneers, no laboratory step is involved.

Yes. Where active decay is present, it is addressed during the preparation stage before the composite is applied. This means both the health and the appearance of the tooth can be managed in the same visit.

With proper care, composite veneers can last several years, though they are more susceptible to staining and chipping than porcelain. Your dentist will check them at regular appointments and can repair or refresh them as needed.
