Porcelain Veneers for Chipped and Discoloured Front Teeth

E Porcelain Veneers in New Gisborne 1 1 1

Can porcelain veneers restore chipped and discoloured front teeth in New Gisborne?

Presenting Concerns

The patient presented with concern about chipped front teeth and discolouration from old restorations that no longer matched the surrounding natural enamel.

  • Tooth Chipping: Front teeth affected by chipping, compromising the structural edge and the overall appearance of the smile
  • Restoration Discolouration: Old fillings on the front teeth had darkened over time, creating a visible colour mismatch against the surrounding enamel
  • Aesthetic Concern: Self-consciousness about the appearance of the front teeth when smiling

The primary clinical objective was to restore the chipped edges and correct the discolouration using porcelain veneers in the same course of treatment.

Treatment Plan and Process

Porcelain veneers were selected to address both the chipping and the discolouration across the affected front teeth.

Phase 1: Assessment and Planning: A thorough examination confirmed the extent of the chipping, the condition of the existing restorations, and the amount of healthy tooth structure available for veneer support. Shade and shape were planned for the intended result.

Phase 2: Preparation: The teeth were prepared for veneer placement. The old discoloured restorations were removed and the teeth were shaped to allow the veneers to bond flush to the surface.

Phase 3: Veneer Placement: Custom-fabricated porcelain veneers were fitted, checked for shade and fit, and permanently bonded. The completed veneers restored the chipped edges and corrected the colour mismatch.

Clinical Outcome

Porcelain veneers were bonded to the front teeth over the course of treatment, restoring the chipped edges and correcting the discolouration left by the old restorations.

Individual outcomes depend on the degree of chipping, the condition of the existing restorations, the amount of remaining healthy tooth structure, and lifestyle and care habits. Results experienced by one patient do not necessarily reflect outcomes others may experience.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. A porcelain veneer covers the front surface of the tooth including the damaged edge, restoring the appearance and providing a degree of protection for the remaining structure. For chips involving more significant damage deeper into the tooth, a crown may be more appropriate. Your dentist will assess which option is right for your situation.

Composite fillings can absorb colour from food and drinks over the years, making them appear darker than the surrounding enamel. The surface can also develop wear over time that accelerates pigment build-up. When a filling becomes noticeably different in colour, it tends to draw attention rather than blend naturally with the tooth.

Porcelain veneers are made in a laboratory and bonded in a separate appointment, while composite veneers are applied directly by your dentist in a single visit. Porcelain is generally more resistant to staining over the long term. Your dentist will help you understand which option suits your situation best.
