What Are the Different Treatments for Gum Recession?
Have you started noticing that your gums are gradually pulling back?
Gum recession isn’t just a cosmetic concern. It can cause sensitivity, increase your risk of decay, and even lead to tooth loss if left untreated. But here’s the good news, there are some really effective ways to manage and treat it. Let’s explore your options.
First up, scaling and root planing.
This is a deep cleaning procedure where we remove plaque and tartar from below the gumline. It helps your gums reattach to the tooth and reduces inflammation. It’s usually the go-to treatment in the early stages of gum recession.
For more advanced cases, gum grafting might be the best option.
This involves taking tissue and grafting it over the receded area, either from the roof of your mouth or a tissue bank. It’s a reliable way to cover exposed roots and restore the gumline for better long-term health.
There’s also a minimally invasive alternative called the pinhole surgical technique (PST). With PST, we make a tiny hole in the gum and gently loosen and reposition the tissue to cover the root, no scalpels, no sutures, and a quicker recovery.
Another option for certain cases is tissue regeneration.
These treatments use proteins or growth factors to stimulate natural healing in the gums. While they won’t regrow gum tissue entirely, they can offer real support and help stop recession from getting worse.
And if you’re mostly struggling with sensitivity, dental bonding could help.
We apply a tooth-coloured resin to the exposed root to protect it and reduce discomfort. It doesn’t fix the recession, but it can make daily life much more comfortable.
Of course, prevention is key.
Gentle brushing with a soft-bristled toothbrush, regular flossing, and a professional clean every six months can go a long way in keeping your gums healthy.
So if you’ve noticed your gums starting to recede or you’ve already been diagnosed with gum issues, don’t leave it too long.
