In a recent case at Dental House, two crowns were designed for a patient’s lower left teeth: one at the very back and one on the premolar. Both teeth were cracked and fairly broken, making crowns the appropriate restorative option. Here is how the process unfolded from design through to fitting.
How the Crown Process Works
Preparing the Tooth
The appointment begins with a local anaesthetic to numb the area. Once the patient is comfortable, the tooth is shaped to create enough space for the ceramic crown to sit properly. This preparation stage typically takes around 20 to 30 minutes and forms the foundation for a well-fitting restoration.
Designing the Crown to Match Your Bite
After preparation, the team uses digital technology to design the crown. This is where precision matters most. The design is checked against the patient’s existing teeth and bite to make sure the new crown will function correctly alongside everything else in the mouth. Any adjustments are made at this stage, before milling begins.
Milling the Crown In-House
Once the design is confirmed, the crown is milled from ceramic directly in the clinic. Having an in-house milling capability means the team can produce the restoration without sending it to an external laboratory. For patients, this supports a more streamlined process with fewer visits and no need for extended temporary restorations. You can read more about the CEREC same-day crown process on the services page.
Fitting and Cementing the Crown
Once the crown is ready, the patient returns to have it cemented into place. The team checks the fit and bite one final time before the crown is bonded, ensuring it sits correctly and feels natural. A well-fitted crown is designed to be durable and to function just like the original tooth.
